Cortez Masto Commemorates National Coming Out Day

Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Catherine Cortez Masto (D-NV) today released the following statement and accompanying video message commemorating National Coming Out Day, which is celebrated on every year on October 11.

“Coming out is one of the most courageous acts an LGBTQ person will make in their life. On this day, we recognize and reaffirm our support for all LGBTQ Americans who have suffered discrimination, humiliation or violence as a result of their identity. I am proud to stand in solidarity with the queer community and all of those who have risked and sacrificed their lives to secure the basic civil rights and protections that all Americans should be guaranteed.

“We have come a long way since the Stonewall riots of 1969, but there is much work to be done. We must continue to fight in Congress to break down barriers for LGBTQ individuals and to pass the long-overdue Equality Act to ensure federal protections against discrimination. Today, we celebrate the bravery of the LGBTQ community and renew our commitment to ensuring equality for all.”
