ICYMI: As SCOTUS Hears Oral Arguments, Cortez Masto Pushes to Protect Access to Abortion Pill

VIDEO: With oral arguments in FDA v. Alliance for Hippocratic Medicine before the Supreme Court today, Cortez Masto reiterates her work to protect access to mifepristone, lays out the stakes for Nevada

In Case You Missed It, the U.S. Supreme Court is hearing oral arguments today in the case of Alliance for Hippocratic Medicine v. FDA, which could threaten access to mifepristone, an abortion pill that was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2000 and is also critical for miscarriage care. In January, Cortez Masto joined an amicus brief urging the Court to protect access to this safe, effective medication that accounts for 63% of abortions in the U.S. She’s also cosponsored a resolution in support of the abortion pill.

Last year, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit ordered the FDA to reinstate burdensome and unnecessary restrictions on mifepristone, undoing 8 years of scientific and evidence-based actions taken by the FDA. Cortez Masto has called on the Supreme Court to reverse the lower courts’ decisions. If the Supreme Court upholds the Fifth Circuit’s ruling, women’s access to mifepristone will be severely limited, even in Nevada.

“This morning, anti-choice extremists are arguing before the Supreme Court to limit access to the abortion pill mifepristone in Nevada and across the country,” said Senator Cortez Masto. “The stakes for women nationwide couldn’t be higher, and I’ll continue fighting to protect access to this safe, effective drug.”

Senator Cortez Masto has been fierce advocate for women’s reproductive rights. In response to the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, Cortez Masto introduced the Freedom to Travel for Health Care Act to ensure legal protections for women traveling across state lines to receive reproductive care. She’s championed the Women’s Health Protection Act to guarantee equal access to abortion everywhere. She’s also a cosponsor of legislation to codify the right to contraception, and has urged the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) to protect the data privacy of women seeking reproductive care. She took on one of the nation’s biggest pharmaceutical wholesalers to ensure Nevadans can access the abortion pill in retail pharmacies, including Walgreens.
