Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Catherine Cortez Masto (D-Nev.) released the following statement on President Trump’s executive order to create a Presidential Commission on Election Integrity:
“President Trump has been peddling lies about voter fraud despite little to no evidence to back up his claims. I am concerned that this new commission is masqueraded under the guise of improving ‘election integrity’ yet nothing but an attempt to justify future attempts to suppress voter turnout. Instead of creating a commission to address a nonexistent problem, we should focus on barriers that qualified voters face, like discriminatory voter ID laws and excessive lines at polling places. We must focus on the real barriers Americans face in casting their vote by restoring and expanding crucial protections of the Voting Rights Act.”
