Cortez Masto, Rosen Applaud $3.8 Million DOT Green Energy Grant to Reduce Public Transportation Emissions

Las Vegas, Nev.  U.S. Senators Catherine Cortez Masto (D-Nev.) and Jacky Rosen (D-Nev.) announced that the Department of Transportation (DOT) has awarded $3,853,200 to the Regional Transportation Commission (RTC) of Southern Nevada for the purchase of no or low emission public transportation vehicles. Senators Cortez Masto and Rosen wrote a letter of support for RTC of Southern Nevada’s grant application.

“Thousands of Las Vegas residents rely on public transportation every day, and I applaud the efforts of both the DOT and the RTC to work together to upgrade their buss fleets to lower emissions and combat pollution,” said Senator Cortez Masto. “I’m proud to have advocated for the awarding of this grant, and I’ll continue to fight for funding for more innovative and green transportation improvements across Nevada.”

“As Nevada continues to build and strengthen its transportation services, it is critical that it does so in a clean and environmentally friendly way,” said Senator Rosen. “This funding from the Department of Transportation will assist our state and the RTC in implementing low-emission transit vehicles, as well as help support clean energy infrastructure development across our state.”

“We appreciate our federal delegation’s leadership and commitment to clean energy,” said MJ Maynard, RTC CEO. “This grant will allow the Regional Transportation Commission of Southern Nevada (RTC) to continue to invest in new technologies and deploy the first-of-their-kind fuel cell electric public transit buses in Southern Nevada, improving air quality and reducing pollutants and greenhouse gas emissions.”

BACKGROUND:

The Department of Transportation’s (DOT) Low-No Grant Program supports the transition of the nation’s transit fleet to the lowest polluting and most energy efficient transit vehicles. The Low-No Program provides funding to State and local governmental authorities for the purchase or lease of zero-emission and low-emission transit buses, including acquisition, construction, and leasing of required supporting facilities.
