Las Vegas, Nev. – U.S. Senators Catherine Cortez Masto (D-Nev.) and Jacky Rosen (D-Nev.) announced $4,595,058 in grant funding to help Native American communities across Nevada maintain operations and funding for affordable housing programs during the coronavirus pandemic. This funding was appropriated in the recently passed Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act. The awards will be distributed through the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Indian Housing Block Grant (IHBG) program.
“This funding will help support the continued operation of vital affordable housing programs in Native American communities across Nevada during the coronavirus pandemic,” said the Senators. “We’ll continue fighting to ensure Nevada’s tribal communities, businesses, and health clinics receive the support and resources they need to weather this crisis and keep their families safe.”
BACKGROUND:
This funding is a result of the bipartisan Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act, which both Senators Cortez Masto and Rosen voted in support of, and which was signed into law on March 27, 2020. The funding will be distributed by the Indian Housing Block Grant (IHBG) program which will assist grant recipients with affordable housing activities in safe and healthy environments on Indian reservations, in Indian communities, and in Native Alaskan villages. FY 2020 COVID Recovery allocations made to eligible Tribes under the IHBG program will help prevent, prepare for, and respond to coronavirus, by allowing Native American communities to maintain normal operations and fund eligible affordable housing activities during the period that the program is impacted by coronavirus.
