Cortez Masto Statement on Veterans Day

Washington, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senator Catherine Cortez Masto (D-Nev.) released the following statement commemorating Veterans Day. Senator Cortez Masto’s remarks are also available in VIDEO FORMAT.

"Today, on Veterans Day, we honor the service and sacrifice of our nation’s veterans—those brave men and women who put their lives on the line to defend our freedom. I am proud to come from a long line of veterans. My father and grandfathers all answered the call of duty, and they instilled in my sister and me the values they gained through their military experience—service, integrity, and respect.

"We owe each and every veteran a debt of gratitude. And though we can never fully repay that debt, we must do everything in our power to ensure these brave Americans and their families have every resource they have earned and deserve. I am honored to work in the United States Senate every day pushing for legislation that supports our veterans by ensuring they have access to the best health care we can provide, including mental health services, affordable housing, educational and career opportunities, and financial security.

"I’ve introduced bipartisan legislation, the Know Your Vets Act of 2020, to connect military members separating from service with veteran service officers providing resources ranging from housing assistance and health care guidance to job training opportunities. I’ve also introduced legislation, the Accelerating Veterans Recovery Outdoors Act, which would improve and expand veterans’ access to our nation’s beautiful public lands, as well as outdoor therapy and rehabilitation treatments.

"But my work in the Senate for our veterans goes beyond legislation. I want Nevada veterans to know that my office is here to help. If you or your family needs federal assistance, please reach out to my office or visit my website at

"To Nevada’s veterans and veterans all across the nation: thank you."

Senator Cortez Masto is a strong advocate in the Senate for Nevada’s veterans. Yesterday, the Senator’s bipartisan legislation, the Accelerating Veterans Recovery Outdoors Act, was passed by the Senate and now heads to the President’s desk to be signed into law. This legislation will create an intergovernmental task force to identify opportunities to expand access and usage of public lands to veterans for outdoor wellness and rehabilitation treatments.
