Cortez Masto Statement on LGBT Pride Month

Reno, Nev. – U.S. Senator Catherine Cortez Masto (D-Nev.) released the following statement in recognition of LGBT Pride Month:

“In June, the LGBTQ community and allies come together to celebrate Pride Month. Born out of the Stonewall riots that rocked our nation almost 50 years ago, this month celebrates truth, it honors courage, and it embraces love. LGBTQ Nevadans contribute to our communities in our military, law enforcement, social services, and as small business owners. LGBTQ Americans continue to contribute to our country and I honor the sacrifices so many have made in the fight for the fundamental American right of equality.”

“In Nevada, the Gay and Lesbian Community Center of Southern Nevada is doing amazing work by helping the Las Vegas community support LGBTQ individuals, allies and low income residents. In Reno, the Our Center is partnering with the LGBTQ community to protect homeless LGBTQ youth and encourage Nevadans to advocate for the equality of all individuals. I also want to congratulate Reno’s recent Our Center Harvey Milk award winners. While we stand with pride at all we’ve accomplished together, we also recognize all we must still do to protect LGBTQ kids in our schools, continue the fight to end HIV/AIDS, and protect LGBTQ people who face persecution throughout the world. I am proud to work for LGBTQ Nevadans in the Senate and push back against hatred and intolerance. I will continue to honor our LGBTQ community members and stand by them in the march towards equality and acceptance.”
