Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Catherine Cortez Masto (D-Nev.) released the following statement on the threats and safety risks posed by rapidly advancing AI technology.
“AI development is moving quickly and the safety risks for Americans are also increasing every day. Congress and the U.S. AI industry must take the lead to address these threats while preserving American innovation. Especially since the President has made clear he has no intent to do anything to keep us safe.
“I’m calling on Congressional leadership of both parties to hold AI safety hearings immediately. We need responsible policy that helps us compete with China while setting the global standard for commonsense guardrails on AI development and transparency. This can’t wait.
“I’m pushing the Trump Administration to restore and strengthen chip export controls that stop our adversaries from using American technology against us. I advocated for these controls to protect our national security – Trump should never have rolled them back.
“Artificial intelligence capabilities are growing by the minute, and America’s frontier AI companies are making billions every year. While these tools hold immense potential, Congress has a role to play to protect Americans from AI-enabled threats ranging from cybercrime to terrorism.
“As this technology evolves, I will be working to ensure we have safeguards, protections for impacted workers, and that the American public is involved in this process that affects us all.”
