Cortez Masto Applauds $1.8 Million for Mental Health Education in Nevada

Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Catherine Cortez Masto (D-Nev.) today announced that the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has awarded $1,800,000 to the Nevada Department of Education to fund programs to increase mental health education. Working alongside state and community partners, the Department of Education will use the funds to increase mental health awareness, screening, and connections to community-based mental health services.

“I’m glad to see these funds go to mental health education and awareness across the Silver State. We need to raise awareness of mental health challenges across Nevada and the country, so that people can recognize these challenges as they arise and find resources that are best suited to their needs. Mental and behavioral health services are underfunded around the country, which is why I continue to work so hard in the Senate to get Nevadans the access to quality mental health care that they need. This is especially important during the coronavirus pandemic, which has caused tremendous anxiety and stress and is exacerbating pre-existing conditions.”

BACKGROUND:

Senator Cortez Masto has been a strong advocate for more support for Nevadans addressing mental and behavioral health and substance use challenges. She led a group of Senate colleagues in introducing the Mental Health Equity Act of 2020 to address the issues of suicide and mental health in youth, with a focus on those in socially and economically disadvantaged communities. She has also introduced a bill to boost the capacity of peer behavioral health support programs by transitioning them to an online setting. In addition, she has called for more funding for mental and behavioral health in future coronavirus legislation.
