Cortez Masto Statement on Vote Against Confirmation of Governor Sam Brownback as Ambassador At-Large for International Religious Freedom

Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Catherine Cortez Masto (D-Nev.) released the following statement after she voted against the confirmation of Governor Sam Brownback as Ambassador At-Large for International Religious Freedom:

“My Catholic faith teaches me that ignorance is not a virtue and that hate is not gospel, unless you’re in the Trump Administration. Governor Brownback has stood against the compassionate efforts of religious organizations working to resettle refugees in the United States, refused to recognize the basic human rights of LGBTQ people threatened abroad, championed the restriction of women’s rights in the United States Senate, and increased poverty for struggling families in the State of Kansas. Governor Brownback is an excellent example of this Administration’s callous disregard for basic human rights abroad and for their continued disrespect for the basic dignity of Americans of different faiths, ethnicities, gender identities, and sexualities here at home.”
